Turquoise and Mandarin are prevalant throughout southern Italy here’s a revisit to an early revelation of this beautiful color combination…
Can it be true? Is summer really over?
I’m not sure if I’m ready for this!
After our visit to the South of France, we flew down to Corsica for a cruise. As it turned out, the Mistrals began to blow, so we spent most of our time off the coast of Sardegna, Italia.
Along this coast, I became entranced by a color scheme I kept seeing: splendid pairings of blue and orange. These colors were bold and beautiful for summer – but I think they could also work for the fall Indian summer.
Here’s what I saw:
These satsuma umbrellas stood out against the cerulean blue sea and the sun drenched sky at a beach club in Cala di Volpe.
I loved this tangerine transparency atop the pale blue linens at the restaurant La Pergola on the piazzetta, just overlooking the harbor, in Porto Cervo, Costa Smeralda.
This restaurant dressed their tables with a mesmerizing mix of pale colored linens and bright serveware. This vibrant sea blue glass looked stunning against peach and rough white linens.
The hearty blue stoneware ashtrays (with a little (orangish) red clay showing through) were the perfect contrast to the delicate glass plates.
These sedums hung down from a potted plant, on the balcony high above the table where we sat for a supreme lunch on dell’isola di La Maddalena. The sage blue “blossoms”, with the pale coral background was a beautiful display, coincidentally. I’m not quite sure how to replicate this, but it’s worth considering! What a flavorful, friendly lunch we had of fresh seafood and tender pasta, out of the winds, at a long table in the alley, at the restaurant Osteria da Liò.
The gambas were quite colorful as well!
This was an incredible home store in Porto Rotondo. Do you see that fabulous white twig lampshade? Plenty of orange and turquoise items available here to accessorise the beach shack splendido.
Vicolo di Mezzo in the village of Porto Cervo.
The white sand, turquoise umbrellas and a persimmon colored lifeguard boat at Porto Paglia beckoned us to shore.
Coral rosé (rosa?) in the sand.
A simple and distinctive label with the colors of the region on a coarse paper label.
These boats from the sailing school, Centro Velico Caprera, off the Isla Caprera, ripped by our anchored yachts on this breezy morning, chasing after and coaching their racers.
The fleet of solid orange boats skimming over on the lippy blue sea kept us entertained well past breakfast on one of our final mornings in Italy (too bad the coffee wasn’t better, not to whine, but really, we were in Italy).
And then, of course, there were the sunsets (without any grappa, oh shoot, I’m whining again).
Oh, but I do miss those indigo seas and marmalade skies.
Since we were on the Costa Smeralda (the Emerald Coast) we thought we’d surely see the green flash….have you ever seen it? We didn’t.
The weather is cooling, the skies are grey, there was even a little rain this morning.
But I think we can hold onto these colors of summer just a little longer….
Fino a Domani….
