The devastating news of the damage done by Hurricane Dorian inspired me to go back and look at the posts I wrote after we had the great privilege to explore this unique and charming part of the world. My heart goes out to all of the residents who are trying to recover. I realize many of these places may be gone now, but I believe the special spirit of these islands will live on…
Famous local watering holes, each one rich in history, loaded with atmosphere and unique in traditions, can be found all over the Bahamas, here are just a few that are well worth visiting. Sundowners, in New Plymouth, Green Turtle Cay is a partially covered dock that looks out over the Sea of Abacos. People love this place for their fresh seafood, nighttime bands and karaoke, cold Kaliks {the beer of the Bahamas} and the rays and fish that can been seen swimming beneath their dinghy dock.
The Green Turtle Cay Club has a full restaurant and the eclectic “Dollar Bar”, named for a tradition that started after WWII when servicemen would leave a signed dollar behind to buy a drink for friends who may come later.

This tradition has continued over the years and today the walls of this cozy club are covered with bills signed by people from all over the world.
This also known as the Yacht Club Bar, referring to the international collection of burgees hanging from the wood beams above.
This public gathering spot is known for it’s award winning “Tipsy little Rum Punch” and for dancing on the deck under the massive Buttonwood tree to a great Reggae music.
The night before our foray that led us to Junkanoo we brought in the New Year at Nippers, a big outdoor bar and grill that feels like a play structure built onto the sand dunes on Guana Cay,
famous for their Sunday afternoon pig roasts and dancing under the stars (and fireworks).
