The Erie Canal….

If it’s Wednesday, we must be in Rochester…the college tour has continued on the east coast.

My “little one” flew the red eye to meet me in Rochester. After tucking him into bed for a mid-morning nap, so he could be somewhat coherent, I hit the trail along the Erie Canal.
The air was amazing, humid and thick, but brisk. I could smell a fragrance that was distinctively fall, the still water, the trees, grasses and falling foliage.
The leaves were all turning the brightest colors and falling in the most perfect display.

I wish you could have seen and heard all of the leaves falling on this old greenhouse. A few droplets of rain added some weight to the leaves and the sound of them tapping to the ground was a melodic song.
Look at this field of Lillies of the Valley on the backside of this greenhouse. I can only imagine how wonderful this little grove smells in the early spring. If you don’t hear from me next year on mother’s day, I may be camping out here!!
There are some retails section, along the canal but it is mostly homes. Most of the houses have small docks on the waters. The homes were a mix of design, age and size. Their lawns usually butted up to the trail on which I was walking, with their docks on the other side of the trail.
Most are decorated au natural.
This one was adorned with potted flowers and sculptures.

I loved this little homemade skiff attached to one of the docks, “volvo” it’s called, maybe that’s the engine.

Barges tour up and down the canal. You can take a daytime tour, or rent a barge for a week and cruise from Buffalo NY, all the way to Whitehall, VT, {Lake Champlain}. I think that would be an amazing excursion!
The lights on the bridge show the drivers where to keep their port and starboard sides.
This captain is making his own rules.. oh well, why not, he has it all to himself and it is a lovely day.
These changing colors are definitely putting me into the fall spirit.

 We stayed at the Del Monte Lodge and Spa in Pittsford {about 10 miles from the Rochester airport}. The rooms were comfortable, the beds were divine, though the hotel decor was a little gaudy for my taste. But the spa is very nice, a wonderful sanctuary. They offer a full range of services.  I especially loved the jugs of cold fruited water throughout the hotel/ spa area, so refreshing.

Heather gave me a perfect blow out after my venture on the canal {fringe benefit of being the roadie!}

After awakening my academic, we crossed the canal again to head to Geneva {New York} for tour number one.

I wish we could just take a barge all the way to Vermont.
