Dining beneath citrus trees and other lovely places in Marrakech…

We feasted on many amazing meals in Marrakech, each one in locations rich in ambiance, history and traditions. I think my favorite dinner was on our final night when we had dinner in a beautiful old riad that served delicious traditional cuisine with a stylish presentation at the Comptoir du Pacha.

The seating is situated around a traditional Andalusian courtyard, we sat on the edge to see the comings and goings of this alluring spot and to take in all of the decor details; there are also cozy booths tucked into nooks and cranny’s with cushioned seats covered with thick, colorful fabrics.

The owner and staff were delightful and very hospitable and the rooftop lounge offered an incredible view of the city.

Entering the restaurant Dar Zellij felt like we were traveling to a completely different place and time. The servers wear traditional long white robes and fez hats creating a striking contrast to the deep red lighting; rose petals were swimming around in the bubbling fountain in the center of the courtyard; traditional music hummed in the background and the only thing between us and the starry sky were the tall citrus trees growing in the courtyard.

The architecture and details of this spectacular 17th century riad have been beautifully preserved to offer an authentic experience.

We could have made a meal out of the Mosaic of Fine Salads, a collection of mostly vegetable dishes {beets, eggplant, chickpeas, lentils, etc.} seasoned with exotic herbs and spices. But we carried on to also try their delicious tagines…

and could not have been more content.

Our first night, after a long day of travel, our hotel directed us to these beautifully painted and patined doors to dine at the restaurant I Limoni.

They serve Moroccan cuisine with an Italian accent, and true to the full name of the restaurant “The Lemon Garden” we dined beneath an abundance of fruit hanging from the citrus trees in the courtyard.

In regards to lunches it was impossible to top our first lunch at the extraordinary Terrace des Epices.
We had a bite at the famous Mamounia Hotel one day. It was great to see the grand palace and the gardens, but I found the food to be too fussy and lacking in flavor. We loved the 1920’s colonial Moroccan vibe of The Grande Café de la Poste, you could almost hear “As Time Goes By” wafting through the air.
Well, my friends, I think it’s time to say goodnight to Morocco. Thank you for coming along on the tour with me, I hope you enjoyed it.
