High above this bustling city made of steel and stone and scented with incense and ambition is a very cool natural sanctuary.
The wealthy have been coming up here since the 19th century for the views and relief from the heat.
Many had homes here, but the only way to access it was in Sedan Chairs, powered by their household staff or a hired duo.
Now, the astounding views over the city are available to all since the first cable funicular in Asia was installed, reaching up to Victoria Peak, in 1888.
Today, an enormous “ship” provides incredible views, snacks and shopping at the top of the lift.
I liked it better when it was incorporated in waves of haze {below}, which was how it looked when we first got to the top. This is a perfect demonstration of just how quickly weather rolls in and out here. By the time we finished the circle around Victoria Peak (about an hour), the weather was completely clear and sunny {above}.
Just to be completely truthful, we didn’t take the tram up, because the line was way too long and we had so little time, so we took a
it was about a 20 minute drive to the top.
Once we got up we skimmed through the busy viewpoint in search of the historic trail where the elite used to circle in their Sedan Chairs to cool down and see the sights.
We were happy to walk the well preserved trail, along with an interesting international mix of other pedestrians.
The path was peacefully lush and green and the air was thick with a very cooling humidity.
It is another reminder of the many dualities of Hong Kong, along the way there were hints of history on one side.
And on the other side, astounding views of the modern day.
The peak is 552 metres above the sea, the highest point of the island, which is why incoming cargo ship captains have looked up here seeking a signal for centuries. Here’s a view of all of the cargo ships in the bay, waiting to load up with goods to transport around the globe.
