It’s still quite drizzly here, but that doesn’t stop me from looking out the windows and considering the gardens. I like looking out to identify spots that need more greenery or flowers to make things look more lush, or complex, or to conceal something I’d rather not see. Generally, I plant a variety of greenery with white and blue flowers. But lately, I’ve been thinking about dipping my paintbrush into some pots of orange to add to my garden canvas.
Does anyone know what this beautiful flower is called? It is stupendous.
There is a beautiful home in my neighborhood I cruise by regularly. As gorgeous as the architecture, pale blue stucco walls, white trim and shake roof are…. it’s actually the three curbside flowerbeds that really capture my attention.
They always have the most marvelous combinations of colors, shapes and textures that make these beds pop off~the~charts. The current display is especially remarkable, and I believe it is the combination of orange and blue that really makes it so stunning. Below you can see the towering orange “lilies” in context.
But lets look closer at the base of this gathering, there the blue pansies, blue forget~me~nots, and that little orange fluff of a bush that make a perfect surround for the taller, more elegant flowers. If you scroll back up, you’ll see how the orange at the base and the top, with the blue in between, really makes this display sing.
But, what is that orange fluff?
Well, I did a little research and that plant is called Heuchera, and the color is Marmalade. It sounds like a pretty perfect plant, “Marmalade”, according to it’s label “stands out with its rich, shiny, undulating foliage ranging in color from umber to deep sienna. Showy in all seasons, this vigorous plant has heavy substances standing up to inclement weather. A great landscape choice which performs well in both sun and shade. Won first place at the Royal Dutch Flower Bulb Association show in 2008”.
I’ve been enjoying my “black”… {it’s actually more of a deep purple}
and white giant tulips I planted on that transitional day last December.
But, I have to admit, there is something a little flat about the overall display, I think a touch of marmalade would really enhance this bed. I found some Heuchera today, and as soon as the monsoons cease, I will incorporate them into these beds in my courtyard.
It may be too late for this years tulip crop, but when they come back next year, there will be a nice splash of marmalade waiting for them.
Are you planning out your beds, planters and pots for the spring and summer? What are your floral dreams, discoveries and desires??

Oh my gosh, I am in love with your black tulips! GORGEOUS! So beautiful. Emily.
