Amaryllis packed in cache pots are a lovely sight around the home, alone or combined with other decorations to create holiday scenes. These large bulbs can be found in plastic pots in garden stores and grocery stores. In a couple of minutes they can be transformed to become a shining star in your winter wonderland. The bright green stalks are vibrant enough, but when the blossoms open, a stunning display is yours for weeks.
We found these cache pots at Pottery Barn, they are designed to look like antique mercury glass. To create this look, we first watered the bulbs well. Then, we inverted the pot so it would fall out of the pot, into our hand, in one “clump”, the flower stalk is between the pointer and middle finger.
In one quick motion, the “clump” travelled from its dull green plastic home, to a shiny, silvery new pied-à-terre, where it was dressed with a bough or two of greens and a glittery pine cone.
Into the soil we submerged a pussy willow stick, attaching it to the flower stalk with a piece of raffia. This branch will support the plant later, when the flower is so large and heavy, it would fall over on it’s own. It’s good to insert the support early, so that the roots aren’t damaged by adding it later.
Mist the Amaryllis daily to keep the bulb moist. Also, rotate the pot every other day, so it is evenly exposed to light, otherwise it will “reach” to the light source and not grow up straight and tall.
These also make great hostess gifts.
