I don’t know about you, but this Independence Day feels quite different from any other. We are missing our family and friends, yet trying to keep it festive and uplifting. To keep our spirits high I created this salty star struck table scape on the porch, garnished with tart cherries from the orchard.
We are hopeful that our great country will make it through this difficult time {note face mask at the ready on the Dukhobors bar in the entry}.
Three cheers for the red, white and blue.
Here’s what I was planning to wear today, but probably won’t…
Roadside salmon berries and unripe blackberries from the field added a dash of red to my island bouquets…
I was quite thankful to have a well stocked pantry so I could make this spunky Puttanesca sauce to put over slices of sautéed polenta for lunch.
We usually only find ravaged branches and a few pits on our cherry trees, but this year we beat the birds to the harvest of our sour cherries by wrapping the trees in a mesh shawl.
They are now pitted and resting in a bath of Orange Blossom water. Tomorrow they will be conserved to be enjoyed for the coming years.
This is such a difficult, uncertain time for so many. I hope you are all staying safe and well. I feel sad, but also very fortunate to be in this safe haven. Please take care and be safe.
