TOGA party… what to wear?

TOGA, TOGA…bay laurel garlands
Part of the fun {and stress} of being invited to a theme party is figuring out what to wear, this toga party was no exception. All of the guests were abuzz, trying to figure out the ideal god and goddess~like frocks to wear to this affair.
For Mr. Splendid and myself, I just bought some ready made costumes and fabric glue to embellish them with golden trims and ropes.

I loved these little scarab stick ons I found, I stuck them on my cheek, shoulder, etc…when conversations lulled I would slap them and mention infestation issues….

My favorite piece that I wore to the toga party was my bay leaf garland. A fan on our Splendid Market facebook page shared the notion of wearing a garland of ivy.

When I read that, it occurred to me that I had a hearty bay laurel tree in the garden in need of a trim. I trimmed a few sprigs of rosemary as well.
To make the garlands, I found two long laurel branches and used paddle wire to secure one end of each together.

Then I wrapped the twigs around our heads (mine and that of my “date”).  When I measured the right sizes I secured the twigs with more paddle wire.

I cut plenty of sprigs of bay — 4 – 6 inches each.

Then used paddle wire to attach the sprigs. After attaching the first sprig and securing it with a wrap of wire, I covered the base of that sprig with another, and then wired the next sprig onto the ring.

Then I continued around the the base, layering sprig over sprig and securing each one with a wrap of paddle wire.

Our garlands were full, festive, GREEN and amazingly fragrant.
It was such a pleasure walking around the party beneath that effusive cloud of bay and rosemary and those beautiful fresh green leaves. I could still smell the bay in my hair the next day.
Fresh bay laurel garlands, a good reason to throw a toga party,

  • Ah, Emily, you are hilarious! You went to so much effort.

Thanks for your comment about your marine charts – they would be brilliant to use. Hmm, I might have to start hunting some down myself.

And I must admit, this is the first time I've popped over here recently (instead of just scrolling through in Google Reader) and I *love* your new makeover. It's absolutely divine and very *you*. Bravo! J x
