When I first heard of the Fête du Citron years ago it landed high on my list of “things to do”. The town of Menton, just east of our pied~á~terre in Eze~sur~Mer and west of Italy is known as the City of Citrus and for 83 years they have been celebrating that status with this incredible salute to fruit.
I’ve always loved visiting Menton for it’s markets, museums, restaurants and the streets that are lined with trees dripping with oranges. During the festival, the trees are upstaged by massive displays in the The Biovés Gardens hand made using up to 15 tons of oranges and lemons per display.
Who knew that lemons and oranges could be used to recreate such complex architecture and mosaics?
The bright and cheerful fruit was a welcome sight on this chilly day.
When I attended in 2016 the theme was Cinecitta, celebrating the Italian Cinema during the 50’s and 60’s.
This year the theme for the Fête du Citron is Des Mondes Fantastic, or Fantastic Worlds and it will run from February 16 – March 3 ~ let me know if you are planning to attend and if you have any questions I can help you with in your planning.
Each display was inspired by an Italian film from that golden era.
Aren’t these incredible? Doesn’t it make you want to squeeze a large glass of orange juice?
Local growers and producers were on hand selling their beautiful fruits, citrus trees and products made with citrus.
At night the fantasy continues with music and elaborate lighting.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this super sized dose of Vitamin C, let me know if you can come over for Des Mondes Fantastic this year!
