Light my fire…

We are in the thick of “curl up by the fire” weather, the winds are gusting, the leaves are dancing in the streets and the cold rains are pelting at the windows.

I’ve been writing about the inspiring colors of the season lately, but today I want to focus on the best scent of our cooler seasons. I just smelled it again today, that smell of smoke from a wood burning fire drifting on top of the cool evening air with a little sweetness from the remaining leaves and a touch of wet wood mustiness. It smells the best when you are all bundled up, your face is cold and the leaves are crunching under your feet. It tells you that somewhere, near or far, there is a cozy, warm place where the embers are burning and someone is enjoying the warmth.

Thankfully, that wonderful woodsy scent can also be enjoyed indoors. Recently, I was introduced to a gorgeous new {for me} home fragrance from my friends at Antica Farmacista, appropriately named Lustrous Fire or Il Fuoco di Lustro. It provides luscious whiffs of fresh air, wood, smokiness, herbaceousness and a touch of pine. The scent is so well blended that it smells very natural in the home, unlike some of the over powering home fragrances. As described by AF it is a “divine dark fragrance, evoking wintry fireside evenings”, what wood be more perfect than that on a stormy day?

Il Fuoco di Lustro
I’m beyond beaming to have received a 1/2 cord of apple wood last week, just in time for the cold season and now stacked up and ready to burn. If you need firewood in Washington state, see the contact information at the bottom of this post.

This well seasoned apple wood comes from an orchard in Yakima, it is very dry, and quickly lights a beautiful fire. If you have a box or basket handy, you may also receive some of the remaining bark in the truck to use for kindling.

Firewood is not only functional, in that it keeps us warm and scents the outdoor air, it can also be quite beautiful, in a rustic, organic, architectural way. Cut logs look handsome on display au naturel

or dressed up with a few random ends painted gold, for that rustic~regal log look.
But you don’t need a whole heap of wood to add a touch of rustic to your abode.
At Pasta & Co., a local gourmet food store, the tasty displays of foods for Thanksgiving are garnished with colorful bundles of colorfully painted wood.
We are so thrilled to have a Calypso St. Barths store open in Seattle, I’m looking forward to going to an opening party on Tuesday night, click on Stolen Youth for detail, I’d love to see you there. I couldn’t resist popping into the shop the other day for a little preview, however. The store is gorgeously appointed, and I especially loved this frosted twig stool.
An ideal theme for Christmas decor is a Lodge~y chateau~chic look. Here bundles of silver painted twigs are a part of the frosty forest floor display one can lay down the center of the dining room table to go with this theme.
The bundles also outfitted the mantle, next to bark candles available at Pottery Barn.

While warming your toes this winter consider polishing them with “Light my Sapphire”, from OPI, it’s a rich, deep black navy, with a scent of silver, the perfect contrast to the best of flames.

If you are interested in a delivery of firewood, please call Ali at 509-329-6247, he’s friendly and professional and makes deliveries in the Seattle area several times a week…

Oh, and, finally, another all time wondrously woodsy scent is

{firewood}
 candles and room spray from Diptyque are another elegant way to bring the complex fragrance of a winter evening indoors.

….you can’t get much higher.
